Underwater Recovery

 

  1. First things first. A general plan must be constructed to determine the number of divers and skill sets that will be required. This will be based, in part, on water depth, visibility, size of the object (or objects) to be recovered. The size, number and type of surface support vessels needed.

  2. Selection of appropriate underwater and topside personnel to to fill specific recovery skill sets.

  3. Selection of equipment needed to perform the underwater mission including, but not limited to, dry or wet suits, communications equipment, size and number of lift bags (if appropriate), marker buoys with anchors, underwater DFE, breathing gas (or gasses) for divers, underwater decompression equipment (as required), etc.

  4. Surface recovery equipment, for surface recovery from the water, which may be as simple as a rope and bad, a boat mounted davit or for large items a crane.

  5. Water conditions at proposed time of mission, including wave height and period, visibility, surface traffic, etc.
